Monthly meetings
YASL hosts monthly events, alternating between book clubs and topical/professional developments events (such as field trips, speakers, and panels). If you have any ideas for upcoming events, please feel free to bring your ideas to the meetings or to email the officers at [email protected]!
september meeting
SEPTEMBER 5, 2014, 12-1 P.M.
The first meeting of 2014-2015 YASL was on Friday, September 5, from 12-1 p.m. The meeting began with introductions of officers and members and a discussion of the monthly format of meetings. Additionally, the officers introduced this website as well as provided contact information (just as a reminder, officers can be contacted at [email protected]).
Upcoming planned events that were discussed at the meeting included the ALA Happy Hour (which YASL co-sponsored) on September 5 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Sava’s; a Book Crawl to visit bookstores around the area; and an October book club with a Banned Books theme (see here for additional information). Relatedly, a Banned Books Week (September 21-27, 2014) collaboration with SISJ (including shared events at MLibrary as well as creating posters and displays for NQ) was discussed. Additional planned events include Peer Advising in November and Quasi-Con and the KidLib Unconference in the winter semester.
During the meeting, we also brainstormed some more events for the upcoming school year. One idea included planning a meeting or panel about how to get book reviews professionally published. A member suggested inviting last year’s 624 (Media for Children and Young Adults) professor, Kathleen McBroom, to help with guiding members in submitting their reviews to professional publications (a large component of 624 is writing reviews). Other ideas brainstormed included hosting a Day-in-the-Life Panel similar to one that was held last year as well as an informal coffee hour (perhaps centering around #WeNeedDiverseBooks). Collaborations with LETSI, SLA, and ALA were also discussed.
Please look out for two upcoming emails: 1). A Doodle poll (which can be found here) that will give us an idea of everyone’s best available times for the upcoming October book club meeting and 2). A confirmation of the date/location/time of the October book club.
Thanks to everyone who came to our first meeting, and if you couldn’t come this month, we hope to see you at the October book club!
