Thanks to everyone who came out last week to our first book club of the year! It was a small group, but the discussion was lively and we all left with more titles to add to our to-read lists. We examined everything from how the illustrations in graphic novels could be used to portray metaphor in serious stories, to how the format can work as an entry point for reluctant readers, and to how well the format lends itself to series. Couldn't make it but want to try out graphic novels for yourself? Here's a list of the books we discussed:
Bone, Vol. 1: Out From Boneville by Jeff Smith
Drama by Raina Talgemeier
Lunch Lady and the Mutant Mathletes (#7) by Jarrett J. Krosoczka
Olympians, 2: Athena, Grey-Eyed Goddess by George O'Connor
Yummy: The Last Days of a Southside Shorty by G. Neri and Randy Duburke
We also briefly discussed the discussion topic for November's gathering. Stay tuned for more information!
