January - book club
We'll be holding another "reading wildly" book club in January, this one focused on ALA Awards You May Not Know About. See the Book Club Information page and keep an eye out for an email with more information!
february - conferences
In February, we have the chance to attend and participate in two unconferences. An unconference is typically more open and informal than a traditional conference-- ideal for first-time presenters. Attending and presenting at conferences are not only great learning experiences, they also look great on a resume. Please consider participating in one or both conferences.
Quasi-Con - February 8
You've probably seen emails from Ellen about Quasi-Con. This UMSI ALA unconference begins with participants gathering to decide what topics they will discuss, then breaking out into smaller groups to tackle those topics. The second portion of the day includes scheduled presentations, lightning sessions, and/or panel discussions.
Several YASL members have expressed interest in participating in Quasi-Con either together as a panel or individually. Proposals must be submitted by January 1. See this Google Doc (we'll use it as our planning tool) if you're interested in participating.
MI KidLib Unconference - February 21
This unconference focuses on youth services and takes place at the Clinton-Macomb Public Library in Clinton Township, Michigan-- an easy drive from Ann Arbor. Best of all, it's free to participate! In a slightly different format, this conferences features only breakout sessions (no planned presentations) and Guerilla Storytime at lunch.
KidLib takes place on a Friday, but those who are in SI 638: School Library Media Management can still attend! We have cleared this conference with Kristin and class will not be meeting in-person that week. (She has an online something planned.) Kristin was very generous in rearranging the syllabus to accommodate our request this way, so we'd like to see a great YASL turnout for this event.
Since it's free and there are no planned sessions, everyone needs to register individually. More info about KidLib and the registration form is available here. Email [email protected] after you've registered and we'll arrange carpooling. (Choose "no" for the carpooling option on the registration form.)
