Not sure where you can find graphic novels? Try the Ann Arbor District Library (downtown branch is within walking distance of NQ), the Children's Literature Collection in the basement of the Shapiro Undergraduate Library, or the graphic novel collection in the Duderstadt Center on North Campus. You can also create a free account on NetGalley.com to get access to advanced copies of forthcoming books. Look for an upcoming blog post with more details of what to look for while reading this genre, questions to consider while reading, and a suggestion list of some of our favorite individual titles and graphic novel series. Also upcoming: a poll to determine the best date and time for the book club meeting.
We also asked for input from members about what you'd like to learn more about this year. Here's the list so far:
Initial ideas from Jessica and Sarah
- makerspaces
- panel of local librarians
- early literacy
- early developmental education
- multicultural books
- multilingual books
- censorship and banned books
- field trip to visit local school library
- conferences/workshop information and carpooling
Did you think of something brilliant after the meeting? Leave a note in the comments or email us at [email protected]. To re-emphasize a couple points from the meeting, we want YASL to be a group that can help members expand on what they're learning in class, and we want to make sure that YASL members have influence over the direction the group takes.\
Speaking of censorship and banned books... Banned Books week is fast approaching, September 22-28. MLibrary has a very cool event called Read Out, where students read aloud from their favorite banned books on the Diag. Email Emily Hamstra at [email protected] to sign up to read.
We'll also be adding more information to the Resources page, including librarian bloggers and their Twitter handles. Stay tuned!
